Top tips for getting the best finish on all your painted surfaces if you are planning to DIY

Getting behind a paintbrush or roller may look simple but it can be trickier than it looks to get the perfect finish. To help you achieve professional, long-lasting results, we have put together a few pointers to get you started.

Preparation

Preparation is key to a good finish so take your time. Prepare the surface by cleaning, removing flaky paint, filling holes, sanding, and priming as needed.

Priming:

Depending on your exterior product, you may need to apply a primer to help the paint adhere and give added protection.

Painting

Using a roller with even strokes, apply paint to the ceiling first. Then paint the walls by starting with the corners and edges and then moving to the larger areas.

Trim & doors

Paint the trim, including baseboards, windows and door frames, leaving the doors until last. Paint the edges of the doors first, then move to the flat surfaces.

Touch-ups:

Once painted surfaces are dry, check for imperfections and touch up as required.

As with all painting systems, follow the manufacturer's instructions and allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next one. Extra time may be needed during colder months, as paint can take longer to dry, while painting in the peak of summer in direct sunlight can cause increased brush marks. And although many of our paints are low VOC, it is still essential to take appropriate safety precautions by wearing protective gear like gloves and respirators and ensuring proper ventilation.
